A creative invitation from You Me n’ Art by Renum

21 easy art ideas to try—one beautiful experiment at a time.

Not sure where to begin? You don’t need an elaborate studio or an expensive collection of paints to explore creativity. A pencil, a few colours and one small idea can be enough.

Here are 21 approachable ideas across seven art disciplines, from drawing and pastel blending to painting, pattern-making and craft. Pick one that matches your age, materials and curiosity.

Original colourful oil pastel forest sunset artwork from You Me n’ Art studio

Original studio artwork: a sunset sky and silhouetted trees made with oil pastels.

A small note for families: Younger children should use child-safe, age-appropriate materials with adult supervision. Exercises involving sharp tools, unfamiliar materials, oil paints or specialist mediums need appropriate age and supervision. Each idea is an invitation to experiment, not a required classroom exercise.

Start with a line

  1. Your favourite leaf, three ways

Try with: Paper, pencil, colour pencils

  2. A house made of shapes

Begin with a rectangle and triangle. Add doors, windows, plants, clouds and a surprising detail that makes the house uniquely yours.

    Try with: Pencil, crayons

  3. One object, five colours

Pick a cup, fruit or toy. Draw its outline and explore five different colour schemes without worrying about realistic colours.
